Officials Comment On Flood Chances In Kathryn
KATHRYN, N.D. (AP) - Barnes County Water Resource District
Secretary Jamie Smith says the chances of the small town of Kathryn
being evacuated again this spring are "50-50."
The 55 residents of Kathryn were evacuated for a few days last
April after Sheyenne River flooding began eroding the spillway of
the Clausen Springs Dam south of Valley City. National Guard
soldiers in helicopters dropped more than 100 one-ton sandbags to
shore it up.
State and local agencies later committed $3 million to repair
the dam. But Water Resource District chairman Jeff McMillan says
the work has not yet been done.
