Officials Keep Tabs On Sheyenne Levels
KCSi-T.V. News Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) -- Valley City officials are keeping tabs on the Sheyenne River levels, daily. The Valley City Commission has an agreement with the North Dakota Winter Show to use the South Exhibit Building as “Sandbag Central,” when it’s deemed necessary to start bagging.
No calls are going out at this time for sandbaggers, as officials continue to monitor runoff from a large amount of snowpack, north of the Valley City.
The Public Works Department is shutting off the storm sewer gates to the river, and any local water accumulations from snow melt, are being pumped into the river.
The National Weather Service says, the Sheyenne River will continue rising to near 15 feet Thursday early afternoon. The forecast crest has been lowered because the water released from baldhill dam will decrease to around 200 cfs for a couple of days starting Wednesday (Mar 17th.) Projections show a slow drop in the river levels the rest of the week. Any changes in the rate of overland snowmelt could change the projections.
Mayor Nielson noted that VCSU has asked for a Memorandum of Understanding for help with the flood fight.
The City may hold a meeting based on the National Weather Service upcoming flood forecast.
