Spiritwood, Edgeley Plan For Large Operations
SPIRITWOOD, N.D. (AP) - Great River Energy has unveiled plans
for a $300 million biomass energy plant near its coal-fired power
plant at the Spiritwood Industrial Park near Jamestown.
The biorefinery is expected to go online by 2015, producing
ethanol primarily from wheat straw.
Maple Grove, Minn.-based Great River Energy is developing the
plant and the Danish company Inbicon is providing the technology.
Great River is still looking for an operator for the biorefinery,
which will be called Dakota Spirit AgEnergy LLC.
Waste steam from the coal-fired plant will be used to generate
electricity and heat for the nearby Cargill Inc. malt processing
plant and the Dakota Spirit AgEnergy plant. Great River has been
looking for a second steam host since plans for a proposed corn
ethanol plant fell through.
EDGELEY, N.D. (AP) - A proposed $80 million dairy operation
could start construction later this summer near Edgeley if it gets
the necessary state permits.
Frontier Dairy President Ralph Friebel says the dairy would milk
10,000 cows, with another 2,000 dry cows and 16,000 heifers on the
premises. An estimated 800,000 pounds of milk would be produced
each day.
The dairy would create about 100 full-time jobs with a total
payroll of more than $3 million per year. But some area residents
who spoke at a public meeting this week said they are worried about
the dairy's plans to bring in some workers from Mexico.
Some residents said they also worry about bad smells. Friebel
says odor should not be a problem.
Friebel says the dairy is to be the first of six such operations
around North Dakota.
