New Devils Lake Report
Aug 30, 2010
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) - A new report on Devils Lake flooding
addresses an overall basin plan, additional outlet capacity, saving
the town of Minnewaukan and buying out structures in counties not
previously affected.
The report obtained by The Associated Press was completed by the
state Water Commission, state Department of Emergency Services and
the Army Corps of Engineers. The group is hoping the study and its
more than 30 "possible next steps" will be considered next month
when a federal task force makes it recommendations.
The task force meets Friday in Washington.
The lake is at the bottom of a closed basin that has no natural
river or stream outlet. A wet cycle that began in the early 1990s
has pushed the lake within 6 feet of its natural overflow,
threatening downstream communities.
